When I was doing my second language school program over the Summer of 2019, I stayed in Hokkaido, Japan. The language school I was attending, Hokkaido JaLS, had weekend excursions out of the main city of Sapporo. One of these trips was to see Tomita Farm in Furano and its famous lavender fields.
We left early in the morning, around 7:45 and took the school’s bus to the farm. My best friend, Mochi, nearly missed the bus and she was running after us as we pulled out of the parking lot screaming 待って! (Wait!). It was about a 2-hour ride but we had a few breaks along the way where we stopped for food and bathroom breaks. By the time we arrived there, it was almost 11 am. It was absolutely gorgeous. The farm was in full bloom in mid-July and we were clearly at its peak. Although it was known for lavender fields, there were many other flowers there like poppies, baby’s breath, and dandelions. We took many photos together as a class and explored the fields.
Since it’s known for its lavender, nearly all of the food that you could find at Tomita farm was lavender flavored. I tried lavender ice cream, lavender lemonade, lavender tea, and even saw lavender macaroons.
For lunch, my friends and I found a cute little pizza shop by the parking lot and ordered a whole pizza from them (Japan-sized of course). We also shared this melon ice cream where they used half of a cantaloupe and filled it with vanilla soft serve; it was delicious. I also purchased some corn on the cob before we were about to leave. However, just as we were about to get on the bus, the staff notified us we couldn’t bring the leftovers of our pizza on board. My 3 friends and I sat in the parking lot just eating the pizza as quickly as possible before we hopped on the bus.
